Detection and Treatment Plan of Electroplating Sludge in Vietnam

The electroplating industry is an important component of the manufacturing industry. Electroplating solution, as an important process liquid in the electroplating process, will gradually accumulate toxic metal ions as the number of cycles increases, forming electroplating sludge. The treatment of electroplating sludge is a challenge that the manufacturing industry must face. This article will explore the detection and treatment plan of electroplating sludge in Vietnam, in order to provide reference for electroplating sludge treatment.

On June 16, 2023, a Vietnamese customer sent three packages of electroplating sludge. After sampling and leaching, the laboratory results of three sets of sample solutions were obtained. They are sample 1, sample 2, and sample 3. The ion content of heavy metals such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, magnesium, zinc, iron, copper, chromium, lead, calcium, etc. in the feed solution was detected to be different. These heavy metal ions are the main components of electroplating sludge and have great harm to the environment.

Based on the material liquid detection situation, we can provide the following treatment plan:

For sample 1, its appearance is green, and the pH value can be adjusted by dissolving its solid. Next, use low concentration P204 for impurity removal, extract Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr from the system, and extract a small amount of Pb. Subsequently, the raffinate was saponified using DY319 extractant, and the washed calcium and magnesium were backextracted to enrich nickel.

For sample 2, its appearance is dark green. Firstly, the Fe and Cr ions in the material should be pre-treated to remove them. Then, P204 extractant can be used to remove impurities, remove impurities such as Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, etc., and perform reverse extraction. Next, use DY319 extractant for saponification and extraction of nickel, and perform reverse extraction and enrichment of nickel on the washed calcium and magnesium.

For sample 3, its appearance is black, and pre-treatment is also required to remove Fe and Cr ions from it. Next, use DY988N for copper extraction electrolysis. For the raffinate, it can be directly added to the 2 # sample treatment and processed together.

Electroplating sludge treatment is crucial for environmental protection. According to different treatment methods, the components of electroplating sludge can be effectively separated and recycled, while also reducing environmental pollution and achieving sustainable development goals.

In short, electroplating sludge is a challenge that the manufacturing industry must face, but through scientific treatment methods and effective management measures, the harm of electroplating sludge can be effectively controlled and reduced. At the same time, it also contributes to the sustainable development of industry and promotes the long-term stable development of human economy and society.
